Turtle! Turtle!

It rained cats and dogs last night! We got 7 ...SEVEN...  inches of rain in about 4-5 hours. 4 of that in 1.5 hours. It RAINED!!

We needed it but not all at once. I get so tickled with people complaining about drainage. "We should have better drainage so our streets won't flood." People...buy a clue! When you get THAT much rain in THAT short of time frame, our stormsewers cannot handle it THAT fast! The streets did what they're suppose to do...flood. Streets are like giant gutters that take water to the stormsewers which then in turn take it to our bayous. Streets flood so your house does not flood!! Just don't be an idiot and drive through a flooded street!!

As I was coming home from church, I saw a turtle stuck by a curb so I stopped and put him up on the grass away from the cars.

I drove about another 50 feet and there was another turtle...and ANOTHER turtle in the middle of the road. So I got out and put them up on the grass, too.

I think I rescued 8 turtles from roadkill stew this afternoon.

But when I thought I was done saving turtles, I saw this ittle bitty tiny little blip on the road...at first I thought it was just a leaf or a mud clod...BUT NO...it was baby red ear turtle!!! He got rescued, too.

I'm starting to think it rained turtles last night...not cats and dogs!

Strange Rain Creatures

It's RAINING!!!!

Oh what a beautiful sight!!! Oh what a beautiful sound!!! It so nice to wake up to hear rain falling off the roof and listening to it as it hits the dead grass and hard dirt. It's not a splat but more of a thunk. It's a wonderful sound. But soon the thunks become splashes because it's raining A LOT!!

I got up and thought I'd take a picture of this miraculous wet wonder falling from the sky but got totally distracted by a creature that has come out of no where. At first I thought it was a wet dirt clod (I think they call it mud) but then I noticed it had a tail. X.O.M.G!  It's a baby snapping turtle!!! How the hell did that get here? My house is about 5 houses from the nearest ditch through fenced backyards. There has been no rain for it to live in a puddle. How?? Where?? When?? Where's his mommy??

He's on the sidewalk between my house and the garage. Not far from there was a puddle.  It must have looked like an ocean to this little guy.

He made a bee-line to it and did what comes naturally...stuck his nose up! LOL  You can just see his head sticking up at 12 o'clock in the picture below...just above the green leaves in the middle.

He swam out of the puddle and started walking off into a dead flower bed.

I went back inside to get a little box thinking I would take him to the ditch so he could be closer to water and a food source. But when I came back outside...he was gone :(  ::sadness::

Jack Cat even said he would share some of his breakfast with the little guy.

So...if you're in my backyard...WATCH YOUR STEP!!!  Cuz I've got a snapping turtle that will eat your toes!!

Rain, Rain, Stay Today!

...And Come Again EVERYDAY!

We had a couple of nice rain showers this week. It only totalled about 1/3 of an inch but HEY! we'll take it. That just means we're only NEGATIVE 19.66 inches in our annual rainfall totals. As you can tell from this picture, it wasn't even a heavy rain...the sun is still shining.

I know it's hot up in the North and Northeast but HELLS BELLS!! We have been dealing with triple-digit heat and a triple-digit heat index since May and we've had NO measureable rainfall since last October. We have a 20-inch rain deficit. You've had heat for only a week and rain all year. Go buy a fan and chill! That's what we're doing. It will eventually pass. In the meantime, sweat with the rest of us. And then go take a shower cuz you're startin' to smell funky. :P

It rained today. It was a BEAUTIFUL thing. We haven't had any significant rainfall since September 2010...We're 19 inches BEHIND!!!

Today we got 2 INCHES of rain. That's right. TWO INCHES!!! It's wonderful!!

I just love how water was running off the roof this morning. I wanted to stand under it and get soaked. But damn...I had to go to work.

I can deal with the mud. I'm ready to splash in mud puddles and make mud pies.

Wet Stuff



It was really weird driving home tonight. As I was driving home, this wet stuff kept landing on my windshield and it wouldn't stop!!! It made me so mad...my car was getting wet. :( 

Then I remembered there is this switch on my steering wheel that I've always wondered what it was. So I flipped it. DAMN!!!! These two black arms came out of the hood and went back and forth on the windshield. They wiped the wetness off my windshield!!! Then it did it again! It was soooooo cool!!! I was able to snap a picture of them. Whoever invented these little gadgets ROCKS!!!!
